Working Hard

November 3, 2007

NaBloPoMo!

Because we live in such a small town, there are only a few options for winter heat within the home. On one hand, we have propane. This option is quite expensive, as it takes about $400. One tank, if we used it primarily, would last us a little over a month. Can we say ouch? The other choice available to us is our wood burning stove. It is small, cute, and can heat the entire house. The only problem, we have to provide the wood ourselves.

Last year, friends of ours took pity and “helped” us out. Basically 8 or 9 guys went up into the woods together and brought back enough wood to heat our home for the winter. This year, we are no longer newbies. We decided to get the wood ourselves. SH rented a trailer, bought a chain saw, and bought a wood permit (4 cord of wood for $20. so worth the price!).

When Sultry Husband and I talked about getting wood for ourselves this year, we felt that it was important for our girls to get into the act as well. They should “help” in the effort. Typically on a wood run day, we leave early, find a good log out in the woods, chop it into small pieces and load it on the trailer. The girls love rolling the logs over to the trailer so I can stack them in place. It becomes a game to them, how many can we roll in 10 minutes.

Here is a picture of Sultry Husband cutting into a large tree. Doesn’t he look awesome in all his safety gear?

Today though, I tried to help more than I have been able to. I tried to pick up the heavy rounds. Um, not such a good idea (I am still a bit of a wimp). Then, I tried to roll the rounds over to the trailer. That really killed my lower back. Then I had the idea, right about the same time SH had the same idea. Why didn’t I try out the chainsaw? He handed over all of his super sexy orange safety gear, and I set to work. Totally. Stinkin’. Fun.

Now though, I am sore all over. But hey, I worked hard, and best of all… my hip does not hurt! It was a good day. Productive, positive, and just well-fun! I came home covered in sawdust though. Man a shower never felt so good!
