They Really Love Me!
January 3, 2007As you all know, I am in a small symphony here in Southern Utah. I have discovered that they are a very small but very loyal group of people. Whenever I see one of the people in the store, they always come over to give a greeting. They actually care about people, which is sometimes lacking in some of the larger groups.
Anyway, so back in October, I asked the director if we could possibly do a viola concerto (where there is one soloist backed up by the entire orchestra). He totally went for the idea, and we chose the piece that would be performed the first weekend of April.
As we draw closer to the date of the concert, the time has come for the symphony to begin rehearsals. I was asked to order the music, which I have never done before in my life! I was totally scared. As I called the publisher of my piece (which I have been working on since October), they informed me of the rental price. My heart sank as they told me that it would be $450 for an 8 week rental! Needless to say, I about cried as I called the conductor and asked him what we should do. To which he replied that I should order the music, the symphony would pay the price.
I about fainted. I mean, they are paying $450 so that I can live out one of my dreams. I asked him if they always pay that much for pieces, and he replied “very rarely”. At which point I said that I could possibly switch to a cheaper piece. He told me that I was not to even consider that. He said that I was worth the price and that they would love to do this for me. He said that I am a very valuable member of the symphony and he would do anything to keep me in it. Of course, I told him that I wasn’t planning to go anywhere, but he just laughed and told me to order the piece.
Wow, I really am loved and appreciated here. Perhaps this place isn’t so bad after all eh?

That is so incredibly aweseome!!!! I wish I could hear you play it. Before I had to quit the Hillsboro Symphony they hosted a concerto competion and I was to chicken to try out, piano or horn. I accompanied a couple people though, and I really wish now that I had at least tried. So, you rock! Maybe someday I’ll get the chance again and I won’t wimp out. Your my hero!
